Sir Imran Khan Niazi was born on 25th November 1952 in Lahore to a family of Pashtun origin. He was the only son of Ikramullah Khan Niazi who was a civil engineer. Imran Khan mother name was Shaukat Khanum. The couple long settled in Mianwali which is the northwestern Punjab. Imran Khan is described as a quiet and shy boy who grew up with his four sisters. He received a privileged education and gained an education at Aitchison College Lahore and Royal Grammar School Worcester in England. There he excelled at
cricket and gained recognition for his talent. In 1972 he got into Keble College, Oxford where he read philosophy, politics and economics and graduated in 1975.
Imran Khan is a famous Pakistani politician and legend cricketer. Known for his charming looks and courageous mind, Imran Khan played international cricket for around two decades and after retiring entered the arena of Pakistani politics. Besides his political activism, Imran Khan is also a philanthropist, commentator and the chancellor of the University of Bradford.
Imran Khan focused more on social work and community development after retiring from international cricket. He founded the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust in 1991, which actively worked on the research and development of cancer and other related diseases. This was instigated by his mother’s untimely death, who died of cancer. Khan vowed to address this major issue and was convinced to open anappropriate cancer facility catering to all social segments of the country. He is the founding chairman of the Board of Governors of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital.The state-of-the-art Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Lahore which came into existence on December 29, 1994 is one of the leading institutions for free cancer treatment in the world, it is an international standard institution and is free for poor people. The World Health Organization awarded the United Arab Emirates Foundation Prize for 2004 to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital. He is building another cancer hospital in Karachi. He also founded the Namal College in 2008 at Mianwali which is an associate college of the University of Bradford.
In 1995, Imran Khan married Jemima Goldsmith in a small ceremony which was conducted in Urdu in Paris. They later married in a civil ceremony at the Richmond registry office in England. Jemima converted to Islam although she belonged to half Jewish ancestry. This background later was a cause of great criticism for Imran Khan as he entered politics and was termed as a Zionist by the Islamic parties.Jemima and Imran have two sons Sulaiman Isa and Kasim. The couple was divorced in 2004 after a nine year long marriage due to the fact that Jemima found it really difficult to adjust to the Pakistani way of living. Imran Khan currently resides in the Bani Gala farmhouse.
Imran Khan is the most successful cricket captain and led Pakistan to its glorious victory at the 1992 Cricket World Cup. He served the Pakistani Cricket team from 1971 to 1992 and was the captain from 1982 to 1992. He also got the Pakistani team its first and only One Day World Cup victory in the year 1992. Imran Khan was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame on 14th July 2010.Imran Khan is seen as one of the finest all rounders of cricket that has ever been produced. He belongs to the league of exceptional cricketers like Garfield Sobers, Ian Botham, Kapil Dev and Wasim Akram. He is one of the fastest bowlers of the world and also emerged as amazing batsman. This famous Pashtun is not only known for his performances on the field, but off the field as well.
Imran Khan is a pioneer of the art of reverse swing. He was one of the fastest bowlers ever to grace the game. Michael Holding, the great West Indian fast bowler and commentator, when asked in an interview with Cricinfo who the best bowlers he came up against were, said: “In my time, it was Dennis Lille and Imran Khan. They had pace and they could do things with the ball. You had others who got a lot of wickets, but you wouldn’t say that they were fast. Imran khan could intimidate people out with his pace and also get them with movement, especially into the right hander.”
In 1996 Imran Khan founded his political party, Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf. Imran Khans socio-political movement has Islamic overtones and was inspired partly by Khans renewed commitment to Islam. Also the deteriorating political, economical and the corrupted justice system in Pakistan compelled him to form a party that rejected the status quo. He is highly critical of the judicial system in Pakistan and also the corrupted, dynastic politics.
He speaks against the judiciary which he believes prevents the accountability of the ruling elite in Pakistan He also claims that international aid remains a threat to Pakistan’s sovereignty. According to Khan, add only feeds the government and is of little help to the needy citizens. Policies and reforms are what the country needs immediately.Imran Khan represented manually as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan in 2007. Imran Khan got reelected in 2013 from the same sort of Mianwali. His party gained 35 seats and emerged as the third largest party in Pakistan. As a politician, his vision is to turn Pakistan into a just society, based on human values, by creating an independent and honest judiciary that will uphold democracy, protect human rights and ensure the rule of law and, by promoting a merit based system that provides equal opportunity for upward social mobility to the working classes.
